The Problem of Unaffordable Health Insurance Just Keeps Growing

According to latest government reports, the cost of providing health insurance for a family of four has risen to almost $12,000 a year - that's a whopping $1,000 a month! According to the same report, the number of children in need of health insurance also increased in 2006.

More and more businesses are responding to the rising costs by eliminating coverage for employees, reducing coverages, asking employees to pick up more of the cost, increasing deductibles, and/or establishing benefit funds for employees to buy their own health insurance. The net result - more families with no insurance or reduced benefits. Low wage and minimum wage workers are hit particularly hard. As a result, the number of people arriving at hospital emergency rooms for routine medical care continues to grow at an alarming rate.

People's Health Clinic is able to provide essential health care to those without health insurance before medical issues and concerns become serious problems requiring expensive medical intervention and treatment. While People's Health Clinic is not a final answer to the problem, here in Summit and Wasatch counties, it is a stopgap and refuge for hundreds of people in need of quality medical care, education and referrals. PHC staff also helps its qualified clients gain access to Medicare and Medicaid coverages and assistance.

Clinic Expands To Meet Need
People's Health Clinic is now open three nights every week.

On Tuesdays, the clinic offers family and pediatric medicine.

Wednesday's clinic is for prenatal and obstetrical care of mothers-to-be.

Thursday's clinic provides care and treatment for chronic illness such as diabetes or hypertension.

PHC also has a growing educational program for prenatal and chronic care patients to help them in dealing with their medical conditions. The Thursday clinic was added this year to deal with the ever-increasing number of diabetes and hypertension sufferers. While serving mainly the Hispanic population of our community, the number of Caucasian patients seen this year has risen by over 60%.

Challenge Grant Doubles Your Contribution

Adam and Cindy Bronfman have once again stepped up to support the annual fund-raising appeal of People's Health Clinic with a pledge to match up to $50,000 in donations during this December's drive.
The Bronfmans are long-time supporters of PHC and their generous financial help has made possible the expansion and growth of the PHC's health care services to the uninsured of Summit and Wasatch counties.
This generous grant enables you to, in effect, double the amount of any contribution you make to PHC during our annual fund drive.
Please make your donation to keep People's Health Clinic serving our community!

Clinic Saves Tax Dollars and Insurance Costs!

The early and preventative treatment that People's Health Clinic provides uninsured patients is essential to keeping the effect of the uninsured on insurance rates and tax dollars to a minimum. On average, People's Health Clinic's per-patient visit cost is approximately $120, compared to the nation's average hospital emergency room cost of $350 per visit. Clearly, accessible early treatment keeps minor health concerns from becoming major ones and, as a result, saves the public money. In 2006, PHC fielded almost 2,500 patient visits. The impact on public health costs and the health of our patients is immediate and significant. Your continued contributions are making a difference. We ask for your support in raising the funds to match the Bronfman challenge grant.

A Letter From The Bronfmans

Dear Summit & Wasatch Counties,

Some three or four years ago, my wife Cindy and I learned that approximately 20% of our community was without health insurance. The prognosis for communities with such a large segment of medically uninsured families is dire. The human and financial costs are enormous and, more importantly, the moral and ethical losses are even greater.

In Park City, and across America, those with the least wealth have the least means to obtaining health insurance. And due to the high cost of health care, the uninsured simply do not seek medical treatment until a problem is so acute that there is no other choice. The catastrophic result - pregnant mothers lose babies and their lives, fathers die of heart attacks, parents become dependent on high doses of insulin, the list goes on and on.

Cindy and I learned that by partnering with People's Health Clinic, we could help thousands in our community access medical care. Since then, PHC has grown beyond our expectations. Lives are saved, healthy babies are born, mothers are not dying from complications in childbirth, and parents are treated for diseases before

they become acute. Most importantly, our community has made the moral decision that the health of the entire community is vital, and contributions have made it possible for PHC to become a professional and impactful service provider.

Cindy and I are proud to commit to another year of our challenge grant. We will match all donations to PHC up to $50,000. We are so proud of our association with this great organization.

Thank You!
Adam and Cindy Bronfman

Learn More
In Summit and Wasatch counties alone, 15,000 to 18,000 individuals and families do NOT have health insurance. The People's Health Clinic is the only clinic in the area committed to providing health care and health education to the uninsured. The majority of our patients are hard working families, working in jobs like construction, restaurants, lodging and housekeeping - jobs that pay minimum wage at best and do not provide health insurance. These are people your children go to school with, people you see every day, people that deserve your respect. Be it time, talent or money, your contribution is greatly needed and appreciated.

Invest In Your Community
We anticipate over 2,500 patient visits in 2007. Every dollar donated goes toward the cost to operate People's Health Clinic. Every hour donated by volunteer medical providers, phlebotomists, vitals, intake and translators makes PHC possible. If you want to help, call 615-7822 or stop by 1200 Ironhorse Drive, Suite C, behind Right Angle Framing.

The Board, staff and volunteers of People's Health Clinic extend their gratitude to each and every donor.
Whether $10 or $1,000, your generosity makes our work possible.

indeed it's the only thing that ever does. -Margaret Mead
